The Akita

general akita picture for temporary akita page

The Akita is nothing short of stunning to look at – a ‘big bear’ of a breed with a magnificent coat and fantastic stance.

Beyond the beautiful façade however is a breed that possesses great confidence and self-assuredness; one that requires owners to understand and be capable of accommodating them correctly.

As with all big, strong, confident breeds, Akitas need owners who are fully prepared to be firm but fair with their dogs and provide the required home life to meet their needs.

Their ability to get on well with other dogs/children/other animals will always depend on the individual characters.

A breed that can demonstrate a high predatory chase drive means that few are suitable to live with cats or other small animals.
