Gemma
Upon ‘real’ retirement, my wife gave me the go ahead to have a dog to enjoy and use as a means of getting some exercise in the fresh air.
We visited Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, Old Windsor and passed the interview tests and were able (only just) to stop ourselves bringing home any of the 40 odd dogs that were looking longingly at us in kennels. I decided not to rush into making such an important decision purely on emotional grounds and advised the staff to contact us if a suitable medium sized dog came along, possibly similar to a Labrador as I’d owned two before.
We were phoned up by Battersea, Old Windsor two weeks later and were asked to consider a Labrador bitch, Gemma, who had just come in. We went immediately and knew at once that she was the one for us. We were allowed to take her for a long walk besides the Thames and have a coffee at the teashop - she couldn’t have been better behaved.
Gemma is a super dog who we have had now for over three years. We are very lucky as our home backs onto thousands of acres of the lovely Surrey hills and Gemma is taken for three walks a day. She’s very popular with other walkers. She has great character and is adored by my whole family, is lovely with children, loves to play with her toys and has perfect table manners (she is never given any titbits, as Labradors tend to be canine dustbins!) All in all, a lovely dog from a great organisation. Thanks from a grateful ‘friend’.
