Microchipping

Identifying your pet is an important part of responsible ownership. Every year rescue centres take in thousands of stray dogs and cats, many of which are not reunited with their owners as there is no way of tracing who they belong to. In fact 66% of dogs and 48% of cats arrive at Battersea as strays. So how can you avoid your pet becoming one of the statistics?

Have you dog or cat microchipped. The chip is tiny and inserted by your vet in a simple procedure which is quick and painless. In 2010 only 32% of dogs and 17% of cats coming into Battersea were microchipped.

The chip has a unique code which when scanned with a special reader can be matched to the owner's details on a central database. Rescue centres, animal wardens and vets are all able to scan for this permanent form of identification. It is very important to keep your pet's chip details up-to-date with your contact details so you can be contacted if your pet is found. If you move house or change telephone numbers, remember to let your chip provider know.

We microchip all Battersea dogs and cats before they go to new homes and offer discounted microchipping for just £15 to anyone who owns a dog or cat.  If you'd like to bring your animal into the Home to be microchipped come to our London site between 10.30am and 4pm, Monday to Sunday. Directions are available here.

Battersea successfully reunites thousands of lost pets with their owners each year, and it is microchipping that makes many of these reunions possible.
