Here for every dog and cat professional

Battersea Academy

The Battersea Academy is a centre for professional development that trains animal welfare practitioners from across the UK and around the world. Delivered by Battersea’s experts, Academy programmes are designed to equip participants with the knowledge and practical skills they need to operate their own rescue and rehoming centres effectively and to the highest possible standards.

Delivered at our London site, the Academy is open to any dog and cat rehoming or rescue organisation in any location, from small volunteer-run shelters to established animal rescues. Our programmes are a mix of classroom based learning and hands-on practical work in our kennels and/ or cattery.

We work with participants before they attend and put together a bespoke programme from the following sessions:

  • The animal journey
  • Shelter metrics

  • Establishing dog ownership and risk assessment
  • Morning kennel routine
  • Dog behavioural assessing
  • Stress and complicated behaviours
  • Dog rehoming
  • Determining the home
  • Identifying change
  • Planning and measuring change
Cat sessions

  • The animal journey
  • Shelter metrics
  • Managing your intake
  • Ethical decision making
  • Introduction to cats: What is a cat?
  • Cat behaviour and body language
  • Introduction to cat welfare
  • Stress management and interactions
  • Cat intake
  • Welfare friendly husbandry and hygiene
  • Temperament and temperament assessment
  • Welfare and welfare assessment
  • Management and decision making to improve cat welfare
  • Rehoming
    • Pet homes (Cat Perspective)
    • Pet homes (Customer Perspective)
    • Non-pet outlets

  • Planning and measuring change

During the programme itself we support participants in identifying changes that could enhance their rescue and, after they have attended, we support them in the impact measurement of those changes.

In addition to the learning gained from the programme itself, the Academy is also a great opportunity for rescues to learn from one another and share best practice.
