Catch up with… Poonam Vara
01 JUNE 2020
Each week, we’re introducing you to one of our amazing staff members and volunteers who will tell you more about their work and what a typical day is like for them here at Battersea. They’ll even share stories and photos of their favourite Battersea animals.
This week, we caught up (remotely) with Poonam Vara, Brand Officer at our London Centre.
Tell us a bit about what you do at Battersea
I am the Brand Officer in the Marketing and Communications team at the Battersea London centre. In my role, I help deliver on the whole Battersea brand strategy across the organisation, as well as the marketing campaigns that go out to the public, like Rescue Is My Favourite Breed. I work closely with all the amazing specialist teams across Battersea to help them achieve their different teams’ goals in a way that works within our wider Battersea brand values.
Day to day my role can vary a lot. At the moment I’m working on our latest campaign, Rescues to the Rescue, which is highlighting all of the ways that our wonderful rescue dogs and cats have been helping us cope during lockdown. We still want to encourage people to choose rescue and support Battersea so that our dogs and cats can continue to get the best care and loving new homes.
Like many people, I'm working from home full time. It’s been incredible to see how quickly you can adjust. We've pulled the new campaign together completely remotely, including a TV advert that's constructed from home videos that people have submitted to us. We made a call out to the public and received so many amazing clips of rescue pets bringing comfort during this time! The campaign is the result of a huge collaboration from people all across the organisation and beyond and I'm hugely proud of what we've managed to achieve!
Who is your most memorable Battersea animal and why?
It has to be a staffy called Blue. He was the most lovable chunk with the biggest smile. And a boundless enthusiasm for cuddles and toys. A total dream! I won't lie; they are all pretty amazing!
What is your favourite thing about your work?
I've always loved animals so for me the best thing about working at Battersea is the opportunity to contribute to a cause that I really believe in while working amongst passionate and brilliant minded people. Being able to be around so many dogs (when we're in the office) is always a highlight too!
Show us your favourite ever photo of a Battersea animal
It's always a great moment when we’ve got a dog on the office floor and they decide to take a seat at a meeting or sprawl across the sofa. This is Winnie the bulldog, who decided that in amongst all the comfy dogs beds and sofas, this was the best spot she could sit in, right in the middle of the office in the way of everyone walking past. And she chose to sit like this too!
Top TV, Book or Film recommendation for lockdown?
You can’t go wrong with animation so highly recommend The Willoughby's and The Missing Link on Netflix. Bob's Burgers is also an all-time favourite.
