Battersea welcomes Government's renewed commitment to increasing cruelty sentences
The Queen’s Speech today set out the Government’s priorities, with a legislative programme that includes re-introducing the Animal Welfare (Sentencing) Bill to increase maximum sentences for animal cruelty.
Battersea Chief Executive Claire Horton said: “We welcome the Government’s renewed commitment to increasing sentences for cruelty to animals. We, along with animal lovers across the country, were very disappointed when the Bill fell at prorogation, so it’s encouraging to see Government set out that increasing maximum sentences for animal abusers remains one of the Government’s priorities.
“Animal cruelty is a serious crime, which should have serious consequences. We call on Ministers to bring back the Bill quickly and make these consequences a reality.”
