Run a mile a day in May

1–31 May 2022, your local area

Run 31 miles in May, a mile for every day, on average, a dog or cat spends being cared for at a Battersea centre.

Take on the challenge your way, whether that’s doing weekly runs or getting outside every day. You could even get out and about with a four-legged friend. Get up and running and together we can be there for every dog and cat.

Join The Challenge

Join our dedicated 'Run a Mile a Day in May’ Facebook group and get motivation and support from the Battersea community, as well as information on how you are supporting dogs and cats in need. We’ll send you a free Battersea t-shirt* and every penny you raise will help us improve the lives of every dog and cat that needs us, no matter where they are.

*Your t-shirt will be sent out as soon as possible after you have received your first donation.

The Challenge

I’ve just signed up, what do I do now?

Join the Facebook group for the challenge by clicking 'Join the challenge’. Once you’ve joined, you can register to get your free t-shirt, set up a fundraising page and chat to your fellow participants. Please note – your t-shirt will be posted to you once you have received your first donation.

How do I keep track of how much I've done?

You can use apps such as Strava to track your runs. We will provide you with a digital PDF tracker which will allow you to tick off each mile as you go.

Do I need to provide evidence to the charity that I’ve completed the challenge?

You don’t need to provide evidence that you’ve completed the challenge, we believe you! It is always good to keep your supporters updated with how you’re getting on though. You can post updates, photos, and videos on your fundraising page to show them your progress.

What is the best way to do the challenge?

There are so many different ways you can take on this challenge.

  • You can run a mile a day or clock up the miles over fewer days
  • You can get outdoors or run in the gym
  • You can get your friends and family involved - you could split the distance between you and take on the challenge as a group
  • If you've got a dog, you can get them involved too. Take them out for an extra 10 minutes each day (if they are up for it), the distance will soon add up
Can I start late or early?

Yes – this is your challenge, do what works for you.

What if I don't complete the challenge?

The only thing that matters is that you challenge yourself. Do as much as you can. Every mile and every penny helps.

Can I do the challenge with my dog?

Yes – as long as you feel your dog is up to the challenge, we encourage you to get them involved too.

How do I get my free t-shirt?

Complete this form and we will send you your free Battersea t-shirt as soon as we can after you’ve received your first donation.

How long will my t-shirt take to arrive?

Once registered for the t-shirt, we will send to you as soon as we can after you’ve received your first donation. We will be aiming to send t-shirts twice a week. Please be patient and be assured we will get them to you as soon as possible.

Can I register for more than one t-shirt?

We will only be sending out one t-shirt per person for this challenge. If your friend or family member wants to take part in the challenge too, they will need to order their own t-shirt.

Can my t-shirt be exchanged for a different size?

If you received a different size to the one you ordered, without us contacting you first, then we will be able to send you a new t-shirt. Otherwise, we will not be able exchange your t-shirt.

Will I receive a medal?

We are only sending out a free t-shirt for this challenge. You’ll be able to download a digital badge in the Facebook Group at the end of the challenge month.

Fundraising for the challenge

How do I raise money?

Facebook Fundraisers are the easiest way to raise money. You can set one up in a few seconds. And then it's simple: just share the page with your Facebook friends!

Can people donate who don’t have Facebook?

Yes - you’ll have to take the donation directly from them and add it to your own page yourself.

Can I raise money on JustGiving or another platform?

We’d prefer you raise the money through a Facebook Fundraising page but if that doesn’t work for you it’s not a problem. You can always set up a JustGiving page.

Where will my donations go?

Any money raised on your Facebook fundraising page (or other online giving page) will come directly to Battersea to help the dogs and cats in our care. This will happen automatically.

Can I create a joint Facebook fundraiser?

Yes – create the fundraising page and then click ‘edit organisers’. You can then add your team members and they will then be able to edit the fundraising page and add comments.

Can I just donate to someone else’s fundraiser and not take part?

We would really love it if you're able to set up your own Facebook fundraiser. You'll be amazed at how generous people can be.

Can I just raise money offline with a sponsorship form?

If you would like a sponsorship form, please email us at or call 020 7627 7893.

How do I pay in offline sponsorship?

Please send us your sponsorship forms and cheque made payable to Battersea Dogs and Cats Home to:

Battersea Dogs and Cats Home
4 Battersea Park Road

Card payments: Call 020 7627 7893 between 10am and 4pm Monday to Friday to pay in your money. Then write the amount paid, date paid and your reference number on the sponsorship forms and send them to the address above.

Bank transfer: Please email for information about how you can transfer funds to us.

Do I have to fundraise?

We do encourage participants to set up a Facebook fundraising page to raise money for Battersea. It’s quick and easy to do. Share the page with your Facebook friends and you’ll be surprised how generous people are willing to be to see you taking on the challenge. And you’ll be helping dogs and cats everywhere. There is no minimum fundraising target for this challenge.
Please note – your t-shirt will be posted to you once you have received your first donation.

I’ve got two Facebook fundraising pages; can I combine the two?

Unfortunately, there is not currently a way of merging two Facebook fundraising pages. But 100% of all the money donated on both will come straight to Battersea.

If someone donates offline/not on my Facebook fundraising page, can this be added to my fundraising total on Facebook?

No - unfortunately there is no way of doing this. The only way you could do this would be to write a thank you post on your fundraiser to thank the individual. But this would still not be added to the total.

Why isn’t a donation showing on my page?

If you use the ‘donate’ button on Facebook then the donation will go directly to Battersea, it will not go on your fundraising page. If you would like donations to show on your page you will need to only share your fundraising page link.

Why isn’t my donation showing on my friend's fundraising page?

If you can confirm the following, we can check we have received your donation:

  • The date you donated
  • The amount you donated
  • The name of the person’s fundraiser you donated to

Please note that if you have donated anonymously, we will be unable to do this so please let us know if that is the case.

Why have I been charged for my donation?

Facebook does not take a fee for donations. This could be a test payment Facebook Pay does to validate the account is real. The deduction should be returned quickly.
