Battersea Dogs & Cats Home would not be able to give our dogs and cats the high standard of care we are so proud of without our dedicated team of volunteers. As a result, we dedicate considerable time and resources to their recruitment and training. Before completing this form, please consider whether you will be able to make the required commitment (on cold wet days as well as sunny ones!)

We ask that you only apply for this role if you are available to commit to one Information and Assessment Day plus one Induction and Training Day:

  • Information and Assessment Day:  10:30 – 13:30, Tuesday 12 February or Saturday 16 February  2019
  • Induction and Training Day:  9:00 – 15:30, Monday 18 February or Saturday 23rd February 2019
  • The day of your first shift:  During the week commencing Monday 25 February 2019

Why do we need Cattery Support Volunteers?

This Volunteer role at Battersea Dogs and Cats Home provides vital assistance to the Cattery staff. This is an essential role at the Home, which will make a difference to the lives of the thousands of cats that pass through our doors each year and help them in their journey to reach their new home. You’ll receive full training and support as you help to improve the lives of the cats as we find them, permanent homes.

The Cattery Support Volunteer role is an animal-facing one, and its main purpose is to support staff with husbandry and welfare duties, in order to maintain the high level of care given to cats staying at the Home.


What would I be doing?

  • Daily cleaning and upkeep of cat pens and equipment

  • Sterilising of items within the pens - food bowls, toys, scratching posts etc.

  • Assisting with the socialisation of cats

  • Basic cat grooming and enrichment

  • Refreshing and replacing litter trays

  • Assisting with laundry

  • Helping staff with daily feeding routines

  • Writing behavioural observations

  • Carrying out other duties as required - e.g. polishing glass, mopping floors


What skills would be useful?

  • Cat experience, either having worked with or owned cats

  • Willingness to ‘get stuck in’ and undertake husbandry duties to support staff

  • Capable of reading and writing observations, and keeping accurate records

  • Comfortable in a physically active role spending up to four hours on your feet

  • Good team working skills, and also able to work independently and use initiative

  • Confident and experienced in dealing with cats of different ages / temperaments

  • Receptive to training and new ways of working

  • Able to commit to a weekly shift, for at least six months


What training and support will I get?

  • An induction about the work of Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, and its policies

  • Training in the Home’s feline welfare methods and stress management protocols

  • Successful volunteers will be shown all the relevant systems and processes

  • Ongoing support from the Cattery staff and Volunteer Coordinators

  • Uniform (branded Battersea t-shirt and jumper)

  • Weekly updates on the priority areas of work in the Home

  • The opportunity to gain practical experience within an animal charity

  • References where appropriate


What is the recruitment process like?

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend a group information and assessment session.  Successful candidates will then need to be able to attend an induction and training session If you wish to apply for this role please note you must be available to start your first shift during February 2019


Where would I be volunteering?

Volunteering will take place in the Cattery at Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, Brands Hatch, Kent, TN15 7HH


When would I be volunteering?

Shifts are on the same day each week, either between 08:00am-12:00pm, or 13:00-17:00pm. Each volunteer is assigned with a specific shift and we ask for a commitment of at least six months.

Candidates are shortlisted with the shift days they have selected in mind. As such we advise that you consider your preferred days carefully when filling out an application form.


Who would be my volunteering contact?

Volunteers liaise with Rehoming and Welfare Assistants on a daily basis in terms of the tasks to be carried out. Volunteers are supported by the Brands Hatch Volunteer Coordinator.
