How rehoming works
In order to rehome a dog from us you will be interviewed by one of our experienced rehomers, who will help you choose and rehome a dog that best suits you.
Our rehoming process
Our rehoming process is individual to each and every applicant so please allow plenty of time. Our busiest times tend to be weekends and school holidays.
We rehome dogs all over the country provided that you are able to collect the dog from one of our three sites. If you live over five miles from the Home you can start the rehoming process online. Fill in an application form and a rehomer will telephone you to go over your application form with you.
If you live too far away for a home visit we need you to provide a letter of recommendation from a vet (or rescue centre). In some cases we would request that you ask a local rescue centre if they could carry out a home visit. Please note, this does not guarantee being able to rehome a dog from us.
We have dogs of all ages, colours, shapes and sizes, with different personalities and temperaments. Each dog is assessed to find out what they are like and what sort of home, lifestyle and environment would best suit them.
For example one dog might be able to be left alone for three to four hours as he is relaxed when left alone whereas another might not be able to be left alone at all because he gets anxious or barks or is destructive when left alone.
One might need a rural home and another can go to a flat in the city - each animal is looked at individually and matched at point of interview with the most suitable owner.
How much does it cost?
Our rehoming fee is £95 for dogs. Included in this cost are the following:
- microchipping
- Initial vaccinations, flea and worming treatment
- a collar, identification tag and lead.
- access to our behaviour advice line, for continued advice and support.
In many cases your animal will be neutered, or we will provide you with a voucher towards the cost of neutering. You will also have the option of signing up to four weeks free pet insurance and a starter pack of food, advice and special offers.
5 Steps to Rehoming
There are five stages of the rehoming process at Battersea Dogs & Cats Home and the length of time it takes to find your ideal dog or cat can vary from person to person. All we ask is that you be patient, as finding your perfect partner can sometimes take a few visits.
Please bring with you
- Identification with your name and address. If yours is a joint application, please bring identification for both adults
- Written permission from your council, housing association or landlord if you do not own your home
- All members of the family: it is vital for everyone who will be living with the dog to meet the animal
- Any other dogs (not cats) that will be living with the new dog
Please note that you have to be 18 years old or over to rehome a Battersea dog and 21 years old or over to rehome bull and guarding breeds.
Please remember:
- We cannot guarantee that any animal seen on this website will be suitable for a prospective owner
- We cannot guarantee that any animal seen on this website will be at the centre on visiting
- Although each animal has a full behaviour and temperament assessment whilst at the Home, we cannot accept responsiblity for the temperament of any animal once it has been rehomed.
We will usually visit your home prior to you taking a dog - this will be arranged at the point of interview. The home visit will take place within 7 to 10 working days of your interview.
We are open for rehoming Monday to Friday from 1.00pm to 4.00pm and 10.30am to 4.00pm on Saturday and Sunday. Please note appointments are not needed for these times - interviews are on a first come, first served basis.
Alternatively, we offer an appointment service at our London site Monday to Friday at either 9.00am or 10.30am. To book a rehoming appointment, please call 020 7627 9234.
