More about Sam
Sam is a lovable, goofy Golden Retriever who has quickly won everyone over with his affectionate nature and love of carrying soft toys around. Sam arrived at Battersea as his previous owner felt they could not look after him anymore. Sam has showed to be a sensitive dog who is easily overwhelmed, he does have the goofy golden side to him and will play and enjoys a fuss.
Sam has showed to be a sensitive dog who is easily overwhelmed, he does have the goofy golden side to him and will play and enjoys a fuss, but he can be unsure of formal handling such as veterinary care. For these reasons, Sam is looking for a home that has some experience in owning a dog before.
Sam will need to be the only dog in the home, he is mostly friendly when greeting other dogs on the lead, but he is easily overwhelmed and will put himself into situations he can't cope with as he is unsure how to play and this can cause him some frustration. During most of Sam's social sessions with other dogs, he has been fine to greet and then go off to do his own thing. However, we have had a couple of incidents where he has approached another dog but then has been unable to cope as he lacks social skills on what to do in response to social cues. This has resulting in him looming over the other dog while vocalising towards them. Sam responds well to being told off by other dogs and will remove himself from the situation and being guided by his handlers.
We have no information on if Sam has been around cats before. Onsite we have seen no chase behaviours towards wildlife, therefore indicating that Sam could possibly live with a dog savvy, confident cat with the right introduction.
Sam is not suitable to live with younger children. He has some issues with formal handling, he did growl at the nurse when she was putting cream on him after his operation and can be a little jumpy. However once he is with a bonded with a handler, Sam does enjoys a fuss and otherwise has good manners when you play with him. He would be better suited to experience teens who will give him space when needed.
Sam previously lived in a studio flat so did not have access to his own yard. He is a larger boy so would be ideal to have his own outdoor space for burn offs and off lead exercise.
