At Battersea, we aim to never turn away a dog or cat in need
When pet owners face unexpected circumstances, they sometimes have to make the heartbreaking decision to give up a beloved pet in the hope of giving them a better future.
Every time we find a loving new home for an animal who has had to be given up, we know we’re helping to create the new beginning their owner hoped for. Thanks to the generosity of our amazing supporters, that’s exactly what we were able to do for Sky, a 2-year-old Domestic Shorthair.
Sky arrived at our Old Windsor centre following a change in her owner’s financial circumstances. Sudden changes like this mean it can take longer for animals to adapt to a new environment. That's why at Battersea, we spend lots of time getting to know every animal that needs our help, so that we can make that transition as comfortable as possible for them.
Sky was a friendly and sociable cat, but all the new sounds, smells and the presence of other cats nearby, was a big adjustment for her. She spent her first few days in hiding and sometimes showed her anxiety by giving a warning swipe towards her carers before approaching.
Thanks to the care that you make possible, Sky was given all the help she needed to start coming out of her shell. Through gentle play sessions with her favourite string toys, our team of cattery carers began to build Sky’s trust.
It wasn’t long before she felt safe enough to show us her affectionate and sweet nature.
With Sky’s new confidence shining through, she managed to charm her new family. They told us she has settled in wonderfully in her new home and describe her fondly as 'the perfect loyal and loving cat' that they had always wanted. This happy ending is proof of the difference you make, and we couldn’t be more grateful. Thank you for being there for Battersea cats.
