More about Gerald
Dashing Gerald is a diddy little German Spitz, possibly crossed with a Pomeranian. This delightful ball of auburn fluff came into our care after being found as a stray. He has proven himself to be a sweet boy and quite typical of the Spitz breeds - slightly aloof until he is comfortable with you but then a lot of fun and affection!
Gerald is looking for a calm and quiet new household with understand and patient owners. He could potentially live with older children who understand he may need some space from time to time, and as he has shown no chase drive towards wildlife on site, we also feel he may be able to live with a confident cat who is used to dogs. Gerald has not been house trained during his time with us, so will need owners happy to take this on and start from scratch. For this reason, he would benefit from having direct access to his own garden.
He does take his time to warm up to new people, so will need sensible owners who are willing to go at his pace, advocate for him around new people and appreciate he is not the kind of dog who wants to be mollycoddled or scooped up by people he is not too bonded with, as tempting as it may be! Gerald is sociable with other dogs but has at times shown himself to be a bit persistent in his advances, so would be best as the only dog in his new home.
Gerald has shown some worried behaviours around formal handling and grooming. It is imperative new owners can commit to the support he needs in this area. Due to his coat type, he will need dedicated owners who understand the importance of maintaining the spitz type coat properly. Owners will need to spend time continuing to build on the positive association we have started with his handling and grooming here, building up to brushing him everyday. They will need to factor in the financial responsibility of monthly trips to the groomer to keep his coat and skin in good condition and prevent him from becoming uncomfortable, matted or suffering from skin infections.
