More about Kenji
Kenji is a characterful Akita looking for a new home with owners who have previous experience of the breed and their strong, independent nature.
Kenji enjoys the company of people on his own terms. Once he is comfortable, he is happy to spend time relaxing alongside his favourite people without wanting constant attention. He has an aloof nature, preferring quiet companionship over lots of fuss. His new owners will need to respect his space and recognise when he would rather do his own thing.
He can be wary of unfamiliar people and has shown some strong reactions when he feels uncomfortable. He communicates clearly through his body language, using behaviours such as barking or becoming tense when he is unsure. His new owners will need to understand these signals and allow him to approach new people at his own pace, and avoid forcing interactions.
Kenji enjoys a balance of gentle sniffy walks and opportunities to stretch his legs in secure enclosed areas where he can explore freely. He has generally been happy to pass other dogs without much interest, but he can become very focused at times. For this reason, he is looking to be the only dog in his new home. Owners will need to be happy to walk him in quieter locations while gradually building his confidence around new environments and distractions.
A home with a secure private garden will be essential for Kenji, giving him a safe outdoor space where he can relax without seeing unfamiliar dogs or people. He would also benefit from plenty of mental enrichment alongside his walks, and as a very food-motivated boy, he particularly enjoys puzzle feeders, food toys and games that encourage him to use his brain. Kenji has a wonderful playful side once he feels settled. He loves chasing squeaky toys and enjoys a game of tug with his handlers, showing a fun and engaging personality.
Due to some of the reactions towards unknown people Kenji has shown he is looking for a home with older teenagers or adults only who understand his need for space and quiet. A calmer household with limited visitors would suit him best.
Kenji is a loyal and rewarding companion who will thrive with experienced owners who appreciate his independent nature and are willing to give him the time, patience and understanding he deserves.
