Duke's Story

16 Apr 2026

Duke the bulldog was diagnosed with several health issues related to his breed. These issues, including his screw tail, were making Duke's life really uncomfortable.

Screw tails are very short, tightly curled tails caused by malformed tail bones. They can create deep skin folds, trap moisture and put pressure on the area around the back passage.

Battersea vets decided that Duke needed to have his tail removed to prevent a lifetime of pain, health issues and infections. As Duke also had a very flat face, he had airway surgery to try and improve his breathing, as well as surgery on the painful and infected skin folds on his face.

Dogs use their tails to communicate with us and with each other. Without a healthy tail, Duke will sadly not be able to show this natural behaviour. Fortunately, Duke took all these challenges in his stride and found a loving family who understand the extra care he will need throughout his life.
