As April is National Adopt a Greyhound Month, Battersea’s Old Windsor centre is encouraging the public to welcome Greyhounds into their lives and homes.
Tracey Curren, Rehoming and Welfare Manager at Battersea’s Old Windsor centre, said: “Greyhounds are often overlooked due to common misconceptions about the breed, but they are some of the most affectionate and low-maintenance companions you can find. They are gentle, couch potatoes who are at their happiest lounging on a soft comfy dog bed and going for short daily walks. Their short coats also mean they require minimal grooming, aside from regular brushing. They’re incredibly loving dogs with so much personality and we hope those looking to rehome a dog will open their hearts and their homes to one of the Greyhounds in our care looking for a second chance.”
Greyhounds also have many charming quirks, like their playful short bursts of energy or ‘zoomies’ and the sweet way they lean against their favourite people to show affection.
There are currently six long stay Greyhound residents that have been in the care of Battersea’s Old Windsor staff for over 100 days, more than double the average stay of a dog at Battersea.
Charm
Two-year-old Charm is a playful, adoring and affectionate Greyhound who undoubtedly lives up to her name. She enjoys meeting new people and loves leaning in for a gentle fuss. She’s polite and friendly towards other dogs but is also an independent soul that enjoys keeping to herself, sniffing around and exploring.
She is looking for a loving and patient home in a quieter location that allows her to grow her confidence and flourish in a new environment. Charm would certainly make a ‘charming’ addition to the family.
Scooby
Scooby is a devoted, people-loving Greyhound. His favourite pastimes include going for walks, exploring the outside world and snoozing in comfy spots. Scooby also loves playing with his toys and has developed a talent for throwing them in the air.
He is currently spending time with dedicated Battersea foster carers who are helping him get ready to find a loving home. Since being on foster, Scooby has really come out of his shell, showing his sweet and endearing nature. He enjoys relaxing with his foster carers, leaning on them for a fuss and resting his head on their laps. Occasionally, he enjoys helping himself to slippers, carrying them around with pride. Scooby would love nothing more than to find a home with experienced Greyhound owners where he can have lots of different walking routes with a variety of sights and smells to explore.
Rave
Rave is a bubbly and energetic Greyhound that is full of character. She adores being the centre of attention and loves to lean in for a fuss. She is a very friendly girl who enjoys meeting new people, playing fetch and chasing after her beloved tennis balls. She’s an intelligent dog that picks up new skills quickly. As Rave prefers to have her own space, she is looking to be the only dog in her new home. Rave would be a lovely addition to a new home and is sure to make her new owners smile.
Danny
Danny is a sensitive and gentle Greyhound who is looking for a home with loving owners who can help build his confidence. Danny enjoys the simpler things in life and loves to sunbathe in a sunny spot and have a snooze. He is also fond of car rides and will happily lie down and relax for the journey. Once settled, Danny will show off his playful side, he gets excited by toys and especially enjoys playing with soft toys.
Danny thrives in a calm environment where he can flourish as a loyal companion. He is looking for a home with multiple carers in a quiet location. He would love a home with a private garden where he can relax and enjoy stretching his legs.
Casper & Beau
Battersea’s longest current Greyhound residents are Casper and Beau, a lovely pair who have been at the charity’s Old Windsor centre for over 200 days. Beau is a friendly girl who loves to meet new people, play with toys and run around. Casper is the more cautious of the pair, but he likes a gentle fuss from his favourite people and his confidence is growing with the help of his friend, Beau.
The duo are currently being looked after by one of Battersea’s foster carers to help them flourish and get used to life in a home environment. They love to zoom around the garden together and paddle in the river. Beau continues to help build Casper’s confidence and the pair are looking to settle in a patient and loving home, with knowledge of Greyhounds.
