Trauma in dogs

Understanding, supporting and rebuilding trust.

Many dogs in rescue and rehoming have experienced trauma that continues to influence their behaviour, responses and ability to cope. This session is designed to help those working with dogs recognise the signs of trauma, understand what may be happening beneath the surface, and feel more confident supporting dogs through recovery.

The session explores how past experiences can affect a dog’s brain and behaviour, and what this can look like in a shelter environment. It focuses on practical, realistic approaches that can be used to support traumatised dogs in day-to-day care, helping them feel more safe and secure.

Drawing on behavioural science and applied welfare practice, the session deepens understanding of trauma while keeping the realities of shelter work in mind.
