Courses

Good governance and sustainable boards

Strengthening trustee oversight and long‑term organisational stability.

This half‑day session introduces the core duties of trustees and what effective governance looks like in practice. You’ll explore how boards make decisions, how to build a sustainable trustee team and how to assess and strengthen governance arrangements.

Best for: Senior staff and trustee boards.

Creating an organisational strategy

Developing a clear, practical plan to achieve your goals.

Across two half‑day sessions, you’ll explore how to create an organisational strategy that aligns people, priorities and resources. The course covers strategic planning tools, how to appraise options, how to involve the right voices and how to prepare for implementation.

Best for: Senior staff and trustee boards.

Introduction to risk management

Building confidence in identifying and managing organisational risk.

This short session introduces the principles of active risk management. You’ll explore what risk means in practice, the difference between controls and mitigations and how tools like risk registers support clear, proportionate decision making.

Introduction to safeguarding

Understanding safeguarding responsibilities in animal welfare settings.

This short session explores what safeguarding means in practice and how to identify potential risks. You’ll look at the types of safeguards organisations should have in place and what a clear, effective safeguarding policy should include.

Introduction to project management

Applying simple, structured approaches to deliver successful projects.

This short session introduces the project cycle and how to define, plan and deliver a project with clarity. You’ll explore how to set objectives, manage time and resources and use practical tools that support proportionate, effective project delivery.

Measuring impact for animal welfare organisations

Understanding and applying impact measurement in a shelter context.

This online session introduces the basics of impact measurement, including how to define outcomes, gather useful evidence and use data and stories to support learning and accountability. You’ll also explore MEL principles and the Theory of Change.

Best for: Anyone interested in understanding and applying impact measurement.  

Next session: Wednesday 21 October – up to two hours.  

Impact measurement – short course follow‑up

Clarifying impact measurement through shared discussion.

This relaxed follow‑up session is for people who have completed the core impact course. It offers space to ask questions, explore challenges and reflect on how to apply impact measurement in your organisation.

Best for: People who have attended Measuring Impact for Animal Welfare Organisations.

Strengthening everyday digital safety in animal welfare settings.

This short introductory session explains the core concepts of cyber security and why secure IT matters in day‑to‑day shelter operations. You’ll explore simple, practical ways to protect your organisation’s technology, understand common risks and learn what to do if something goes wrong.
